Creative Visual Art

Esther Gronenborn’s portfolio features vibrant photocollages and video installations.

Artistic journey

After her successful career as a storyteller and filmmaker, Esther Gronenborn turned to landscape photography, which gradually evolved into complex photographic collages. Starting from her own photographs of animals, plants, and traces of nature, she digitally transforms and recomposes them into hybrid image spaces where it often remains unclear whether one is still looking at photography or something entirely different. This element of estrangement, poetic yet unsettling, has become central to her practice.

Her work resonates with contemporary para-pastoral discourse: while classical pastoral imagery idealized nature as an untouched idyll, her collages expose its constructedness, turning nature into a site of projection, disturbance, and uncertainty.

In parallel, her practice has expanded into AI-generated films and large-scale video installations. Here she blends cinematic sensibilities with digital experimentation to explore themes of perception, memory, and transformation. Across media, her work investigates the fragile boundary between presence and disappearance, between the real and the imagined, creating images and spaces that disorient as much as they invite reflection.

Photos

IInspired by cinematic thinking and digital experimentation, Esther’s work focuses on layered photographic collages and atmospheric image-making. Her practice merges documentary fragments with painterly interventions and digital filters, creating para-pastoral, poetic visual spaces.

AI Works

AI has become a significant part of her creative journey as a medium of inquiry. In her video works and installations, she explores the aesthetics, glitches, and narrative ambiguities that emerge from generative AI systems—treating them as a mirror to human imagination.

Themes

Her work explores longing, loss, perception and the fragile bond between humans and nature. With the eye of a filmmaker, she composes symbolic landscapes that evoke memory, uncertainty, and transformation. Her work embraces ambiguity, using poetic imagery to tell stories that unfold between presence and absence.
